Water Diet

Now it’s summer and hot, like many people I am drinking more water. Normally I probably don’t drink enough. What I find is that water tastes better after exercise or when you are in a hot environment. Energy replacement drinks are OK but nothing beats a glass of ice cold water.

Of course water has zero calories so you can drink lots of it. And since it can fill you up, you don’t feel like eating until you really are hungry. I heard that if you are thirsty, you can mistake this feeling for hunger. So keep sipping at water during the day.

The colder the water the better in my opinion. In summer, tap water needs to be run to get the cold water from the pipes down in the ground. If the water is not very cold it may not taste very nice. I found my tap water in summer doesn’t taste very nice even if it’s kept in the fridge. In winter it tastes fine.

One option may be a water filter which could remove the bad taste. But at the moment I am buying 2L bottles of the cheapest bottled water and keeping 2 at a time in the fridge so there is always a supply of chilled water to hand. By only pouring a small amount into a glass at a time I ensure that it remains cold while I am drinking it.

In science, I learn’t that the hotter something is, the quicker it cools down, so the reverse must be true too. Ideally you would have a thick cold glass to pour the water into to keep it ice cold longer or even have a supply of ice cubes to hand.

An easy way to tell if you are dehydrated is by the color of your urine. If it’s orange you need to drink more water. The clearer your urine is, the better.

Btw, since my last post 5 days ago my weight is now 94Kgs. I have been swimming every other day and had an exhausting day at the beach at the weekend doing body boarding and windsurfing. Plus the odd run and weight-training session. So this coupled with my water diet and consequently less food intake is having a dramatic effect on my weight loss.

In case you don’t know, body-boarding is where you surf waves by lying on a small board rather than trying to stand up. You can buy them from good sports shops. It’s great fun but can be dangerous due to strong currents that could sweep you out to sea. So it’s best to do it on a patrolled beach and be a good swimmer. When I go windsurfing, I take the body board so I have something to do when the waves are too big for me to windsurf. I guess this is an idea for another post.
