Power walking and body weight exercises may be better to start off with. p.s. I run but never warm up before the run. I find that a low intensity run does not require a warm up. The same goes for swimming. I just do smooth movements so I don't over do things during the first 5 minutes of the run/swim. I think that if you are very overweight, then you should walk rather than run and gradually build up your stamina and speed with the goal to eventually start running. If you live in an urban area, consider driving to a nice park to do this where you can enjoy the views and plants etc. maybe this would be on your way home from work? @James – maybe so but not everyone is able to run.
