Best Activity to Burn Calories

So which is best for burning calories?

  • Running
  • Walking
  • Swimming

I think running is the highest rate calorie burner, because you are moving your whole body weight along without much support. And, of course it is hard work while you are running and you can easily elevate your heart rate up to it’s maximum potential. But because it is hard, you can’t keep running for very long unless you are very fit.

Another downside of running is that your knees and leg muscles can get sore requiring moderation and rest days to recuperate.

Walking is easy to do, but to get the heart pumping hard enough to burn lots of calories, you need to walk fast. Fast walking is an inneficient way to move but this means it’s a great way to burn calories with less impact on joints than with running. When I used to fast-walk home from work I used to look a bit weird since I was walking unnaturally fast and soaked in sweat! But if you are too heavy or unfit to jog, then walking is a great option. Go to the country parks and hills to explore on foot. But don’t stroll, stride!
I used to love swimming when I had access to a pool. The problem is many pools have unpleasant levels of chemicals in them that make you smell and hurt your eyes. So you need to wear goggles. Also, people can get in your away alot. However, it can be very pleasant and low-impact. To avoid boredom, I used to do sets of 10 lengths of alternate front crawl and breast stroke, working towards a total of 50 lengths in around 30 minutes.

If you are held up in a lane. Stop and wait for the slow swimmer to get near the end of the lane and try to catch up with them before they reach the end. Other games include doing a length of front crawl at maximum speed like a shark was after you, practising underwater swimming, changing direction in the lane without touching the walls of the pool, charging and relaxing in pace with some slow steady swimmer in another lane etc.
